Have you ever been paralyzed by fear? I definitely have, and yeah, it’s not fun. Confidence, something we all lack sometimes, is built through working hard and persisting, even when things get tough and you feel like giving up. Let’s explore how you can improve your overall confidence and face your fears.
What are the fears holding you back? It’s always a good idea to reflect on them. For me, it was always public speaking. Every time I stood up to talk, my heart pounded, and beads of sweat formed on my forehead. Have you ever felt something similar? Recognizing your fears is a good starting point in learning to face them slowly. So, what makes you feel afraid? What’s holding you back? Write them down so they’re on paper for you to look at. This simple act of listing your fears will make them more manageable.
When I decided to face my fear of public speaking, I started small. I practiced in front of a mirror, and then slowly spoke in front of family and friends. Is there a small action you can take today to tackle your fear? The idea is to begin with something small and then slowly build up your confidence and belief in yourself.
Remember, feeling discomfort means you are growing. I remember my first open mic — I was anxious, and the spotlight felt hot on my face. But the crowd’s applause was worth the initial nerves. Each time you face something uncomfortable with, you will become stronger!
Mistakes are an important part of your learning. I once tripped on stage after speaking. It was seriously embarrassing, but I laughed it off and then reflected on what happened. Analyzing your mistakes can help you learn new things. For me, it was realizing I needed to tailor my pants a little. I now wear more comfortable clothing to keep me walking confidently!
Celebrate your successes to keep yourself motivated. After my first big talk, I treated myself to my favorite flavor of ice cream. What successes can you celebrate today? Recognizing your growth improves your confidence and keeps you pushing past the things that hold you back.
Building confidence is attainable if you persist, and are patient with yourself. Each risk you take is one step forward. Remember, a journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step! So, what will your first step be? Take it slow, and give yourself the chance to thrive and be that confident person you always were underneath.
