How wonderful is that burst of excitement when you begin something new? Have you ever then had that feeling fizzle out as you became more accustomed to the activity? We’ve all been there. For me it was when I decided to start playing the violin, only to find out I needed more motivation to get me through the reality of daily practice. Now, picture getting up each day, feeling eager to tackle your goals! What would that feel like? Learning what motivates you can transform your brief enthusiasm into a long-lasting dedication. Together, let’s investigate the psychology of motivation, and help you unlock what drives you to achieve your dreams.
Motivation is a potent force that inspires us to act, achieve our goals, and persist when things get tough. When was the last time you felt unstoppable? What do you remember about that? What was different? Personally, it was when I first started training for a marathon. Every step I took, the air brushing past me, and the pulsing beat of my heart proved I was capable of turning my dream into a reality.
There are two types of motivation that keep us going. Intrinsic, or internal motivation comes from within us, such as the satisfaction you get from painting a beautiful picture or completing a complex jigsaw puzzle. Extrinsic, or external motivation, on the other hand, is driven by external rewards. This can include things like working for money, or for praise from your boss. Now have a think, which type of motivation feels more fulfilling? Most people will say that intrinsic motivation feels more satisfying. Perhaps that’s because it connects directly to our passions and personal sense of purpose. How can you use intrinsic motivation to sustain your drive when pursuing your goals?
Imagine a cold, dreary morning when your bed feels more inviting than getting your fitness gear on and driving to the gym. It isn’t easy, right? This is where learning why you want something plays an important part in your motivation. When I hit a slump with my exercise routine, I reminded myself of the importance of looking after my health and maintaining my energy levels throughout the day. Remember, it’s important to clearly visualize your goals and figure out your purpose in achieving them. How will attaining your goal add value to your life? Try jotting down your motivations and reasons, and see what you come up with. What’s your ‘why’ behind doing what you do?
Have you ever tried surrounding yourself with positive vibes? How does that impact your motivation levels? Remember to recognize small successes and hang around positive people. When I finally did complete that marathon, I didn’t just celebrate crossing the finish line, I made sure to treasure every little milestone along the way. It was more about the process, than simply the result. Which milestones can you celebrate today? Are there successes (big, or small) that deserve your recognition?
So, now that you know how to use motivation, what will be your next move? How are you going to harness its power to propel you toward your dreams? Remember, the path will be challenging, but with a clear purpose, positive outlook, and persistence, you can keep your inner spark glowing bright. Good luck with your journey, and may it be filled with growth, discovery, and triumphs along the way.
